If there’s any major weakness the game has, its that its almost too simple, but I get the feeling that DreamRift wanted it to be something both kids and adults could enjoy, and it certainly fits that bill. That’s okay, though, because the fun of the game’s partner mechanic and ease of play far outweigh the annoyance of having to retrace your steps a few times. You’ll revisit each area at least once, and Ellie’s not exactly a speed demon. One thing I did not like about Monster Tale was the backtracking. I personally like this as there are times where I forget where I’ve already been in this map style, and it can be useful to have a guide. It’ll always tell you where to go next and show it on the map. One thing the game does do is handhold, which will either be handy to you or piss you off, depending on what you prefer. I found Monster Tale to be moderately challenging, but never quite as much so as Hatsworth was, so this is obviously aimed at a slightly different audience. Teacher TipsThe solar systems and stars (Malina, Thea, and Helios) used in the activity are fictional, but they were inspired by real scientific discoveries. As for gameplay, it flows forward in a pleasant manner. The correct shading is essential for the activity, so we suggest printing out copies of these worksheets beforehand to ensure that everything prints correctly. Check Shading on the WorksheetsThe Mission Plan worksheets include greyscale shading that indicates the amount of heat and light that emit from each star of the three solar systems. Homeschool students can work on their own, but this activity works best if each student can engage in debate and discussion with at least one other person. We suggest placing one set of these stations at opposite ends of the classroom or one station on desk clusters of 4 so that students have the most room to spread out.Teacher Science BackgroundWe have rounded numbers to simplify the gravitational differences between Earth and other planets and moons. Each student will only need to visit 4 stations.
